What is a UTM link?
A UTM link is a normal destination URL with campaign labels added as query parameters. Compatible analytics tools can read those labels and group visits by source, channel, campaign, keyword, or creative variation.
UTM originally referred to Urchin Tracking Module. Today, the five familiar utm_* parameter names are widely used for campaign reporting, but adding them does not install analytics or record a visit by itself.
How to use this UTM generator
- Paste the complete page URL people should visit.
- Enter the campaign source, such as
google, linkedin, ornewsletter. - Enter the medium, such as
cpc, social, oremail. - Add a stable campaign name that your team will recognize.
- Optionally add a term or content label when you need more detailed reporting.
- Generate, review, copy, and test the finished link.
UTM parameters explained
utm_sourceidentifies the platform, publisher, partner, or list sending the visit.utm_mediumidentifies the broad channel, such as paid search, social, referral, or email.utm_campaigngroups links under one promotion, launch, or initiative.utm_termis optional and can label a keyword, audience, placement, or targeting group.utm_contentis optional and can distinguish buttons, images, messages, or creative versions.
Use a consistent naming convention
Analytics labels are often case-sensitive. For example, Email and email may appear as separate values. Decide whether your team will use lowercase text, underscores, hyphens, dates, or another documented pattern, then keep it consistent.
Prefer useful names such as product_launch_2026 over vague labels such as campaign1. Do not place passwords, personal information, confidential customer data, or private business details in UTM values because query parameters may appear in browser history, analytics reports, logs, and copied links.
What happens to existing URL parameters?
The generator preserves existing non-UTM query parameters and URL fragments. If the destination already contains one of the five UTM parameters, the value entered in this form replaces it. Leaving optional term or content fields blank removes stale values for those two parameters.
Important limitations
- The tool does not shorten links or create redirects.
- It does not connect to Google Analytics or another platform.
- It cannot guarantee attribution, reporting, or conversion accuracy.
- Browsers, privacy tools, redirects, consent settings, and analytics configuration can affect campaign reporting.
- Some destination websites may deliberately remove query parameters.
Frequently asked questions
Does a UTM parameter change the page content?
Usually not. It adds campaign information to the URL. A website can choose to react to query parameters, so always test the final link before publishing it.
Should internal website links use UTM parameters?
Usually, UTM tags are most useful on external campaign links. Adding them to internal navigation can overwrite the original acquisition context in some analytics setups. Confirm the behavior of your own analytics configuration first.
Are campaign details uploaded?
No. Yellow Tools generates the URL locally in your browser. Opening the finished link sends the URL to its destination like any normal browser navigation.
