What does this ROI calculator show?

The calculator estimates net return, simple return on investment percentage, and the final-value multiple. It supports either a final returned value or an already-calculated net profit or loss so those two meanings are not mixed.

ROI formula

When you enter a final returned value, net return is calculated first:

Net return = final returned value − initial investment

The simple ROI formula is then:

ROI = net return ÷ initial investment × 100

An investment of 5,000 that returns a final value of 6,500 has a net return of 1,500 and a simple ROI of 30%.

Final value versus net profit or loss

Final returned value includes the original capital that came back. Net profit or loss is the gain or loss remaining after investment cost has already been removed. Entering 6,500 as final value is equivalent to entering 1,500 as net profit when initial investment is 5,000.

In net-return mode, use a positive number for profit and a minus sign for a loss. The tool shows the implied final value so unusually large losses remain visible rather than being silently restricted.

What does the return multiple mean?

Return multiple divides final returned value by initial investment. A 1.3× multiple means the final value is 1.3 times the initial cost. This is related to ROI but is displayed as a ratio instead of a percentage gain or loss.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose a currency for display formatting.
  2. Enter the full initial investment cost.
  3. Choose whether the second figure is final value or net profit or loss.
  4. Enter the return amount using the selected definition.
  5. Calculate and review net return, ROI, multiple, and formula breakdown.

Important limitations

  • This is simple ROI and is not annualized.
  • It does not account for investment duration or time value of money.
  • Inflation, taxes, fees, risk, and opportunity cost are not assumed.
  • Currency selection changes formatting and performs no conversion.
  • Past or estimated ROI does not guarantee a future result.
  • The output is not investment, accounting, tax, or financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can ROI be negative?

Yes. A negative ROI means the net return is below zero. In final-value mode, a returned value lower than initial investment produces a negative result.

Can simple ROI compare investments of different durations?

Not reliably by itself. A 20% return over one year and 20% over five years have different timing. This tool intentionally does not annualize the result.

Are the entered figures saved?

No. The calculation runs locally in the browser and this tool does not save the financial figures to a Yellow Tools account.

Need broader performance measurement?

ROI is only as useful as the costs and returns included in it. Yellow Solutions can help clarify digital objectives, measurement plans, conversion journeys, and reporting around the wider business outcome.
