What does this profit margin calculator show?
The calculator combines unit cost, selling price, quantity, and optional extra costs to estimate revenue, total cost, profit or loss, profit margin, and markup. It also shows effective cost and profit per unit after the extra costs are included.
Profit margin formula
Profit equals revenue minus total cost. Profit margin then divides that profit by revenue:
Profit margin = profit ÷ revenue × 100
If revenue is 1,000 and total cost is 700, profit is 300 and profit margin is 30%.
Markup formula
Markup compares profit with cost instead of revenue:
Markup = profit ÷ total cost × 100
Using the same 300 profit and 700 total cost, markup is approximately 42.86%. Margin and markup describe different relationships and should not be treated as interchangeable.
How extra costs are handled
Extra costs are treated as one total amount for the full quantity. For example, if ten items each cost 60 and the order has 100 of packaging, advertising, or transaction costs, total cost becomes 700 rather than 600.
Include only costs that belong in the scenario you are comparing. Leaving out relevant fees can overstate profit and both percentages.

Important limitations
- The selected currency changes formatting but performs no conversion.
- Results are estimates based entirely on the figures entered.

Frequently asked questions
Why is markup higher than margin in a profitable example?
Markup divides profit by cost, while margin divides profit by revenue. When a sale is profitable, cost is normally the smaller base, producing the larger percentage.
What happens when total cost is zero?
Profit margin can still be calculated from revenue, but markup is not defined because division by zero is impossible. The tool shows that state explicitly instead of displaying infinity.
Is the calculation uploaded or saved?
No. The calculation runs locally in the browser and this tool does not save the entered financial figures to a Yellow Tools account.
