What are meta tags?
Metadata describes a web page to browsers, search engines, and social platforms. A page title is technically a <title>element rather than a meta tag, but it is usually managed alongside the description, canonical URL, robots directives, and social-sharing fields inside the document <head>.
Good metadata makes the page's subject and preferred URL explicit. It can improve how a page is understood and shared, but it does not force a search engine or social network to display the exact supplied wording.
How to use this generator
- Write a specific page title and one-line meta description.
- Enter the complete preferred canonical URL for that page.
- Review the indexing, link, and viewport settings.
- Optionally add a site name, public social image URL, and separate social-sharing wording.
- Generate the snippet and inspect the previews and final code.
- Copy or download the output, then integrate it using the conventions of your site or framework.
What the generated snippet includes
- UTF-8 charset and responsive viewport declarations.
- Page title and meta description.
- Canonical link and robots directives.
- An optional author tag.
- Open Graph type, title, description, URL, site name, and image.
- Twitter/X card, title, description, and image tags.
Canonical URLs and robots directives
A canonical URL identifies the preferred version of a page when similar content is available at more than one URL. This tool requires a complete HTTP or HTTPS URL, preserves intentional query parameters, and rejects URL fragments and embedded usernames or passwords.
The normal public-page combination is index, follow. Anoindex directive asks compliant search engines not to index the page. Robots metadata is a request to crawlers, not access control; private information still needs authentication and authorization.
Open Graph and Twitter/X cards
Open Graph fields help compatible platforms build a shared-link card. Twitter/X card fields provide similar information for that card format. When the optional social title or description is blank, this generator reuses the main page title or description so the output remains complete without duplicate form entry.
A social image must already exist at a public HTTP or HTTPS URL. The generator records that URL but deliberately does not download or inspect it. Platforms can cache old card data, enforce their own image rules, or choose a different presentation.
Safe HTML escaping
Ampersands, quotation marks, apostrophes, angle brackets, and URL query separators are escaped before they enter the generated markup. This prevents ordinary text such as company names or quoted phrases from breaking the HTML structure and stops entered markup from becoming a raw tag in the snippet.
Escaping is not a substitute for reviewing the output or securing the final website. The tool also rejects line breaks and control characters in metadata values and places practical limits on text and URL input sizes.
Plain HTML and framework integration
For a plain HTML document, these elements belong inside the<head>. Content management systems and frameworks may provide dedicated metadata fields or APIs instead. For example, Next.js App Router projects should normally translate the values into the Metadata API rather than manually placing duplicate tags in a page.
Next.js already provides default charset and viewport metadata. Other platforms may do the same, so inspect the rendered document head after integration and remove duplicates.
Privacy and limitations
Generation happens locally in the current browser tab. The tool does not submit the entered page copy or fetch the optional social image. Copying, downloading, browser extensions, screenshots, and device access remain outside the generator's control.
- Character counts are editorial aids, not fixed display limits.
- Search engines may create different title links or snippets.
- Social platforms may cache, crop, rewrite, or omit card fields.
- The output does not prove that a public URL or image exists.
- Metadata alone cannot guarantee indexing, traffic, or rankings.
Frequently asked questions
Should every page have unique metadata?
Important indexable pages should usually have a title and description that accurately reflect their own content and intent. Repeating the same generic metadata everywhere makes pages harder to distinguish.
Does noindex make a page private?
No. It is a crawler directive, not a security control. Protect sensitive pages with appropriate authentication, authorization, and server-side access rules.
Why is my social preview different?
The platform may have cached an older version, rejected the image, applied its own layout, or chosen other content. Use the platform's official debugging or sharing tool after the live page is published.
